The idea of a very high iron tower was conceived by two of Gustave Eiffel's engineers, Koechlin and Nouguier. This project, which won the competition for a suitable monument for the Exposition Universelle (Centennial Exposition), was financed by Gustave Eiffel in exchange for using his name. Gustave Eiffel built it between 1887 and 1889.
Gustave Eiffel, a French engineer born in Dijon (1832-1923), was one of the world 19s leading specialists in metal construction. He built a series of bridges and viaducts, the most notable of which was the Garabit viaduct (1882).
The inauguration of the Eiffel Tower in 1889 by president Sadi Carnot, lasted for 6 months. Most famous people in the world have visited the structure, including Archduke Charles Ferdinand of Austria, Thomas Edison and even Yuri Gagarin. For the Exposition Universelle, the Eiffel Tower heralded the 20th century. Having rights of ownership of the tower for twenty years, its builder formed The Eiffel Tower Company in 1888. In 1909, the tower was scheduled to be destroyed... but was saved by the wireless (TSF). In 1912, it gave the time to the whole world, then it participated in the national defence during the war. It is used to indicate wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and as a television mast. Today it transmits for six French channels.
